AI Companions
An AI companion is a chat application built around an ongoing character relationship — persona, continuity, companionship — rather than around answering questions. It is the second market that shares the "AI chatbot" keyword, alongside general-purpose assistants (our main ranking) and task-executing AI assistants.
Why this page exists
"AI chatbot" returns companion apps in the same search results as general-purpose assistants. Our main ranking of general-purpose AI chatbots uses criteria (citation defaults, training opt-outs, price bands) that say nothing about what makes a companion app good, so mixing the two would blur both evaluations. This page keeps the two apart so neither reader wastes a visit.
What a companion app is evaluated on
- Character consistency — does the persona hold across long horizons?
- Memory — what it retains between sessions, and can you inspect or erase it?
- Boundary design — how the product handles dependency, minors, and escalation.
- Data policy — conversations are intimate; the training opt-out question is sharper here than anywhere.
These are criteria, not product claims — we have not verified companion-app vendors against them yet.
FAQ
Is an AI companion the same as an AI chatbot?
No. An AI companion is built around an ongoing character relationship — persona, memory of you, companionship. A general-purpose AI chatbot is a tool you question and converse with. They share a keyword, not a market.
Why does this site not rank AI companion apps?
Our method is built around general-purpose assistants: citation reliability, data training policy, free-tier generosity, model transparency, price flexibility. Companion apps are judged on different criteria entirely; ranking both under one list would blur both. We publish a separate page when coverage warrants it.
The other senses: our general-purpose AI chatbot ranking and the AI assistant page.
